You have completed your dissertation proposal and defended it in front of your committee, you have finished working on the MA dissertation- and finally, you have reached the last stage of writing this paper – the defense of your dissertation.
For some students the process of defending their MA dissertation becomes unbearable- they have fear to go in front of the audience ( especially the audience that consists of committee’s experts) and to present their final piece of writing. These students have a reason to be anxious, but their nervousness will have only negative effect on their presentation. So, it is recommended to calm down – make some yoga exercises and gain confidence in yourself.
All committees’ expectations are pretty similar: they want to hear an interesting and informative report on the outcome of your research. Keep in mind the following advice:
Ø Do not make your report too long- this is impossible to cover all the materials you have presented in your MA dissertation.
Ø Do not make your presentation a boring theoretical lecture – use some visual tools of presenting data, like pictures, tables and even video materials ( if you manage to find or make any).
Ø Finally, do not make your presentation a monologue – discuss your ideas with the committee, invite them to ask questions and be ready to face critics.
Your behavior during MA dissertation defense is as important as the content of your speech. Committee will be subconsciously paying attention to your verbal speech- how you move and how you act. So, try to look as relaxed and confident as possible – you have nothing to be afraid of – your committee consist of usual people.
Good luck in defending your MA dissertation!
